Getting Around the City: After Destruction

Getting to Pompeii Now

Getting around Pompeii back before Mt. Vesuvius was pretty easy back then, but now Pompeii is slightly hard to reach compared to what many think but all the effort taking is definitely worth it.
Pompeii Train Stations Stop
Taking train to access Pompeii is one of the most popular ways to get there as it only takes 30- 40 minutes from Naples or Sorrento which the train line you would need to take is named the Circumvesuviana Napoli-Sorrento Line.

Other options to reach Pompeii is by bus or boat. These options are really limited if you just want to travel by your self if you want some guidance we would recommend joining a tour group.
If you do deiced to join a tour group often you'll be picked up Naples and be taken on a deluxe bus directly to Pompeii. Needing more information about touring and travelling? Click to this website that we highly recommend for use.

Well preserved street in Pompeii
Something which is extremely important to note that Pompeii inside the town has little to no transport. As it is essential to preserve their ruins and ancient history so we can restore Pompeii for as long as we can. If you need a bit more speed than just walking often there are bikes for hire so you can rent bike for the day if you don't want to walk. But on the good side of things Pompeii was a small town so the amount you have to walk won't be long or a struggle if you have a family.

History of Mt. Vesuvius: After Destruction

The history of Pompeii is all about Mt Vesuvius as it killed lots of innocent locals in Pompeii. This is the story of Mount Vesuvius deadly eruption.

Mt Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius eruption
In 79AD Mount Vesuvius erupted without any warning. Mount Vesuvius was a Dormant volcano (a volcano that hasn't erupted for a long time but can still erupt with no warning). At that time Pompeian didn't know what was going on as Mt Vesuvius had smoke coming out of it.  Volcanic gas and ashes started covering the sky and everyone was try to escape. People would get on their
boats and go to another place or their only other option is to run away. Even if people managed to escape very little were able too. For the other people who didn't they had suffered from smelling the gas or were crushed in a house when preparing to run away. As innocent people were not away this eruption wiped out over 3000 local Pompeian in the most deadliest day to ever hit them.

People frozen as statues
Pompeii was preserved well as the whole city was covered in ash. This helps the archaeologists find out more about the history and the people.
Some Pompeian were covered with hot ash that came spewing from the volcano which has caused them to turn into statues. It was one of the worst eruption in the world but at the same time the most famous eruption by Mt Vesuvius, which this volcano is now never expected to erupt again so don't have too much fear.

Good Citizen: How to be One

Which ones are the "Good Citizens"? All citizens can be good ones as long as they treat everyone equally. There are 3 different types of citizens in Pompeii. These citizens are Plebeians (disadvantaged), Patricians (wealthy) and Equestrians (wealthy and collects taxes). Every citizen is treated differently. The wealthy gets treated the best and that is not fair to the disadvantaged so here we are going to tell you how to be a good citizen to be fair to everyone.

How do I become a good Citizen?
Day at the Marketplace
Citizens communicating
with each other
Here are some steps to become a good citizen:
1. To be a good citizen you have to listen to the Senators (read here)
2. You also have to pay your taxes to the Equestrians. By paying taxes you are being a good role model for little kids as you tell them to follow the rules.
3. Serve your country by being a soldier and protect your country from all harm. This may be dangerous but it shows how much you love your country and that you will risk your life for the protection.
4. Be nice to everyone as other person may help you when you have hard times       such as if you're running out of money, lost your job, introduce you to other people so you will have chances to get a better job which would lead to a better life.
5. Help out disadvantaged ones (plebeians, slaves), give them some food and water as they may be struggling without a job or treated unfairly.
In the City, buying and selling products

The Outcome
Being a good citizen will make your image brighter by showing that you are doing everything right. Other people will see you as their role models. The way you act may also change the way other people act around different people and treat everyone equally. The more you help others the more they respect you. Follow some of these steps and you'll be a good citizen in no time.

Pompeii Style: Rank us all

Organizing Classes in Society

Unfortunately like all places and probably where all of you readers world wide are reading from right now, you would know that our society now a days are divide into ranks. Since we are visitors that doesn't effect us at all but it is a heads up to know just in case.

The Ranking 'System'

A group of Patricians
There was several ranks which is commonly used in Pompeii, which were named from more disadvantage were names the Plebeians and slaves were categorized in this category.
Another level is called a Patrician which is kind of Plebeian in their rights but is normally a land owner and is a noble but wealthy usually a large family.
They are wealthy and own large amount of land and they were normally highly educated who got choices on what they wanted to do. They would not need to be part of the military if they didn't want it to be, while Plebeians would have to.
The more mainstream group which many people were classified and named the Equestrians but were still wealthy but not extremely rich.
The last rank in Pompeii a Magistrate which is a very wealthy and well dress individuals which were involved in the senate which they had every right that they wanted to do and had to pay taxes for the city.

What makes each rank different and what advantages and disadvantages they had?

The difference between each rank made the Plebeians have the least rights, then the Patricians, then Equestrians throughout till you are in the Senate.
Toga, which all classes would wear
All of these classes were allow to put their vote in but apart from women and slaves so that was a fair playing field for them. But for all Plebeians unfortunately they have little right or say in things and their only right they have earned is to vote at the assembly (refer to out The Master: Senate blog, if you don't know). Plebeians could not benefit from collecting tax while every other class can. If you are wondering after watching a gladiator show which ranks they are classified as they are slaves and get hand picked by experts which they learn all the skills required. They are treated well when they are not on the battle field but they don't have a say as they are in training and have to obey all directions given by their masters.
